Men’s lacrosse: Ursinus tips Widener, 7-6, to move to 2-0

Ursinus got two goals each from sophomore attack Mark Stratton (Manheim Township) and freshman attack Logan Panaccione as the Bears defeated Widener 7-6 on Wednesday afternoon in men’s lacrosse action.

Sophomore attack Steve Smyrl (Garnet Valley) scored goal and had two assists as the Bears improved to 2-0 and dropped the Pride to 2-2.

Johnny Casey (Abington) had two goals and an assist while Ryan Eidenshink (La Salle) and Tim Taylor (Archbishop Ryan) each scored twice for Widener.

Panaccione scored what turned out to be the game-winner with 8:15 left in the fourth quarter, while the Ursinus defensive unit stepped up again in the final minute, holding Widener to just one shot at the goal.

The Bears took a 2-0 lead after one period on goals by Stratton with 5:19 left on an assist from Smyrl, while Smyrl scored with 2:03 left in the first stanza.

Widener would rally to score three straight goals, but, Ursinus took a 4-3 halftime lead as Panaccione scored with 2:53 left, while sophomore midfielder Ian Moore scored on an assist from Smryl with just one second left.

After Widener tied the score again 51 seconds into the second half, junior midfielder Nile Thompson (Lower Merion) and Stratton scored goals in the third. Stratton’s goal, on an assist from Jake Weber, with 31 seconds left made the score 6-4.

Individually for Ursinus, sophomore defender Ryan Ridinger (Manheim Township) had four ground balls and two caused turnovers. Freshman goalkeeper Brian Neff (Ephrata) made eight saves in the win.

For Widener, Nick Rodgers won 11 of 15 face-offs and Mac Nestler made nine saves while defenseman Charlie Bytheway (Garnet Valley) had five groundballs, an assist and a caused turnover.
