From Press Release

The University of Delaware men’s lacrosse squad moved back into the win column Tuesday afternoon as the Blue Hens overcame an early fourth quarter deficit by scoring four straight goals and moving on to an 11-9 victory over host Lafayette at Fisher Field.

The Hens trailed by a goal just over a minute into the second half, but consecutive scores by Sean Finegan, Alex Martinelli (Moorestown), Connor McRoy, and Eric Smith over the next 11 minutes put Delaware back in front.

Smith, Finegan Nick Diachenko, and Brian Kormandy each scored two goals as the Blue Hens (2-4) snapped a four-game winless streak and downed the Leopards for the 33rd straight time dating all the way back to 1959. The former East Coast Conference foes met for the first time since the 1990 season.

Smith, who scored a point for the 24th straight game for Delaware, also dished out two assists on the day while McRoy added an assist and goalkeeper Chris Herbert turned back 11 shots.

Lafayette (2-4) got a game-high five goals from Brian Bock (Spring-Ford) while Sonny Round scored twice and dished out two assists. Morgan Westby (Episcopal Academy) scored once and Mac Gallagher (Shipley School) had an assist and two groundballs.

The Leopards took their first lead of the game just 1:15 into the final quarter when Bock tallied his fourth goal of the game to give Lafayette an 8-7 advantage. But that lead would be short-lived as the Blue Hens rallied back in a big way, scoring four straight goals over the next nine minutes to take control.

Finegan got things started with his goal with 12:12 left to tie the score at 8-8 before Martinelli tallied his first career goal four minutes later to put the Hens up for good. McRoy and Smith gave the Hens some insurance as they tallied goals just under two minutes apart for an 11-8 lead with 2:57 remaining.
