For the third year in a row, the Hatboro-Horsham boys’ lacrosse team has taken the ultimate plunge.
Twenty members of the Hatters’ squad braved near-freezing temperatures in the waters of the Neshaminy Park Creek last Saturday in the Polar Plunge, the annual event to raise money for Special Olympics.
Under the direction of senior Jimmy Murphy, the Hatters team raised nearly $2,000 for the Special Olympics. The event is part of Murphy’s senior project, which involves volunteering for the Special Olympics and connecting his team and the sport of lacrosse with students with special needs.
Murphy said the Hatters enjoyed dressing up in some entertaining costumes and braving the frozen waters.
“It was colder than 40 in there,” he said. “I know my team likes to dress up and act like clowns for an event like this, but the idea is to help other kids not fortunate enough to play lacrosse.
“It’s always been my interest to help people. I know a lot of kids with (disabilities) in my school who don’t get to play lacrosse and so doing this felt right.”
Murphy said the Plunge helped the team bond just a little more as it gears for the official start of practice Monday.
“It just gets us all together,” he said. “We had a lot of fun and did something to help others.”
