The Lafayette men’s lacrosse team made a statement on Saturday afternoon, knocking off Georgetown in overtime, 11-10. Junior midfielder John Floyd was the hero as his goal with 3:22 on the clock in the extra session gave Lafayette the season-opening victory.
Lafayette, picked to finish seventh in the Patriot League in 2013, proved many of those voters wrong, as it came back from an 8-3 halftime deficit to earn the win. Sophomore attackman Sonny Round led the way for the Leopards, notching four goals on seven shots. Round tallied all of his scores after halftime.
Junior Jake Mann and sophomore Brian Bock (Spring-Ford) each added two scores, while sophomore Keegan Lawton (Bishop Shanahan) and freshman Morgan Westby (Episcopal Academy) each notched a goal for the Leopard attack. Bock added four groundballs. Junior goalkeeper Jake Hyatt was stout between the pipes, stopping 16 shots and allowing 10 goals in 60:38.
Long pole Tyler Knarr (La Salle) had three caused turnovers and a groundball and won 3 of 8 face-offs for the Hoyas.
On the other side, Georgetown’s Brian Casey led the Hoyas with four goals and Charles McCormick tallied two. Chris Nourse, Dan McKinney, Reilly O’Connor and Jason McFadden also added scores for the Hoyas.
Georgetown held an edge in ground balls (38-33), shots (40-38) and clears (19-21), while Lafayette won 13 of the 25 faceoffs and converted on three of its seven extra-man opportunities.
The Hoyas came out firing on all cylinders, tallying four straight in the first seven minute, including a man-up goal from Brian Casey. The Leopards weren’t phased, though, as Mann notched both of his tallies to close out the first quarter with Lafayette down, 4-2.
The Hoyas opened the second with two more scores from McCormick and Casey as the Hoyas took a 6-2 lead. A score from Bock with 4:40 remaining in the half stopped the bleeding for a moment but two more Hoya scores sent the Leopards into the locker room trailing, 8-3.
The Leopards came out in the second half inspired as they scored three straight in the first 12 minutes of the third quarter to pull within two at 8-6. Georgetown’s O’Connor stopped the Lafayette run, but Round started it up again, tallying two to open the fourth quarter and Lawton and Bock put the Maroon and White up 10-9 with 8:41 remaining in the contest.
An unassisted tally from Casey with 2:58 left in the fourth quarter tied the game at 10 and neither team was able to notch the gamewinner in regular time as the game went to an overtime session. With 3:22 left in the extra session Floyd came up with the unassisted gamewinner to seal the win for Lafayette, 11-10.
The Leopards move to 1-0 on their 2013 season, while Georgetown drops to 0-1 on the year. Lafayette returns to Easton for its home opener on Tuesday as it takes on Stony Brook at 4:30 p.m. inside Fisher Stadium.
