Philly women playing major roles on IL Women Division I ranked teams

Phillylacrosse.com spotlights the Philly grads playing on teams ranked heading into the college season. Today we highlight players on the top 10 teams in the Face-Off Yearbook preseason rankings for Division I.

1. Syracuse -
Senior ATT Michele Tumolo (Clearview Regional, 52G, 43A) was the IWLCA Attacker of the Year, a First-Team AA and a Tewaaraton Trophy finalist last year. Junior DEF Kasey Mock (Pottstown, 15GB) and junior MF Amy Cross (Upper Dublin, 13G) played key roles in last year’s run to the title game. Freshman MF Kelly Cross is vying for time.

2. Florida – Gators head coach Amanda O’Leary (Spring-Ford, Temple) has freshman MF Devon Schneider(Manheim Township) in her freshman class.

3. Northwestern -
Sophomore ATT Blake McHugh (Episcopal Academy) is vying for time and junior MF Jessica Roy (Pennridge) is a reserve.

4. North Carolina – Senior MF and co-captain Emily Garrity (Strath Haven, 18G, 13A, 31 DC) is a key returnee while sophomore MF Kelly Devlin (Downingtown East, 17 GB) was a starter last year on the defensive side. Sophomore RS MF Margaret Corzel (Merion Mercy) returns after missing the year with a torn ACL following a strong freshman year; she also is a co-captain. Freshmen Stephanie Lobb (West Chester East, DEF) and Alyssa Andress (Arcbishop Wood, MF) are fighting for time.

5. Maryland – Senior DEF Kristen McAfee (Moorestown) should be a top reserve on defense after missing moast of the 2012 season due to injury.

6. Duke - Sophomore MF Taylor Trimble (Episcopal Academy, 28G) led the Blue Devils in goals as a freshman. Others vying for time are senior ATT Alyssa Ogle (Moorestown), senior ATT Caroline Keating (Agnes Irwin), senior DEF Sarah Kendrick (Hill School), junior DEF Tara Stokes (Shipley School), and sophomore MF Callie Francis (Hill School),

7. Loyola - Sophomore ATT Hannah Schmitt (Archbishop Carroll) had a 42-goal freshman season and looks to be an elite player. Freshman MF Katrina Geiger (Haverford High) is expected to make an immediate impact. Freshman DEF Maddie Lesher (Archbishop Carroll) is vying for time along with sophomore DEF MC McDonald (Notre Dame).

8. Notre Dame – Sophomore DEF Leah Gallagher (Radnor) was a top reserve last year and sophomore G Allie Murray (Downingtown East) should again be the top backup in the cage. Freshman MF Stephanie Toy (Moorestown) should make an immediate impact.

9. Penn State -
Junior DEF Lizzy Carney (Unionville, 36GB) is a pre-season AA but will miss the season due to a torn ACL. Sophomore DEF Cat Layne (Villa Maria Academy) was a starter as a freshman. RS Sophomore ATT Avery Curley (Episcopal Academy), and sophomore DEF Eric McAfee (Moorestown) and junior DEF Carly Bitzer (Central Bucks East) are vying for time. Junior G Melissa Lloyd (Unonville) is fighting for a starting spot and freshman MF Ally Heavens (Garnet Valley) is expected to make an immediate impact. Junior MF Lauren Purvis (Hatboro-Horsham), also a PSU field hockey player, is also on the roster.

10. Penn - the Quakers will look to senior MF and 1st Team All-Ivy Maddie Poplawski (Springfield-Delco, 29G, 61 DC). The starting defense features junior Allie Martin (Radnor, 19GB) and sophomore Taylor Foussadier (Washington Township, 17 GB). Senior MF Kelly McCallion (Notre Dame) and junior MF Lindsey Smith (Unionville, coming off injury) could vie for starting spots. Freshmen MF Brooke Kiley (Germantown Academy) and Iris Williamson (Germantown Friends) are vying for time.
