Men’s lacrosse: Three tournament teams highlight Lafayette’s 2013 schedule

From Press Release

Home contests against Stony Brook and Colgate, as well as a trip to Bethlehem, Pa. to take on Lehigh highlight the 2013 schedule for first-year head coach Jim Rogalski and the Lafayette men’s lacrosse team.

Each of those three teams advanced into the 16-team NCAA Tournament last season, with Lehigh and Stony Brook falling in the first round and Colgate in the second, all to ranked opponents. Stony Brook dropped a 19-9 decision to Johns Hopkins, while Lehigh lost by just one goal to a Maryland team that eventually fell in the Championship game to Loyola Maryland. Colgate pulled off a 13-11 upset win over Massachusetts in the opening round, before running into third-seeded Duke in the quarterfinal, losing 17-6.

“Our non-conference schedule will challenge our team and prepare us for the Patriot League schedule,” Rogalski said. “With Colgate and Lehigh both making the tournament last season, and Colgate, Lehigh and Bucknell ranked in the pre-season top 20 this year, the League will be extremely competitive. The team is ready and looks forward to the challenges of our 2013 campaign.”

The Leopards open their season on Feb. 16 when they travel to Washington, D.C. to take on Georgetown. Following the matchup with the Hoyas, they will face the first of last year’s NCAA Tournament teams in Stony Brook on Feb. 19 in Easton at 4 p.m.

Lafayette will then go on the road for two contests against Manhattan Feb. 23 at 1 p.m. and Wagner on Feb. 26 at 2 p.m. The Leopards took care of Wagner last season in Easton, 19-2.

On March 2, the team returns home for two games against Marist and Delaware (3/6) before opening Patriot League play on March 9 in Annapolis, Md. versus Navy. The Leopards will take on Bucknell in Easton on March 16 and Army in West Point, N.Y. on March 23, and will play their final non-conference game of the season at High Point on Mar. 27 in High Point, N.C.

After an April 4 matchup with Holy Cross, Lafayette will finish its regular season with the two tournament teams from the Patriot League a year ago, Colgate on April 13 in Easton and Lehigh on April 20 in Bethlehem.

The Patriot League Tournament is set for April 26-28.
