Women’s lacrosse: Villanova announces 2013 schedule

Villanova women’s lacrosse Head Coach Julie Young (Germantown Academy) has announced the schedule for the upcoming 2013 season.

The spring slate features one of the toughest line ups in Villanova history and includes seven home games and three contests against 2012 NCAA tournament teams, all of whom were ranked inside the Top 10 in the IWLCA Coaches and DeBeers Media polls at the conclusion of the 2012 season.

The Wildcats will look to make the BIG EAST Championship hosted by Loyola University on May 2nd and 4th in hopes of gaining an NCAA bid upon the finish of the regular season.

For the second straight year, the Wildcats open the season on the road for a pair of matches against Lehigh and Princeton on Saturday, Feb. 16th and Feb. 23rd, respectively. The Mountain Hawks claimed the 2012 outing against Villanova in a 12-8 win at Villanova Stadium and concluded the season with a 7-9 overall record and a 2-5 finish in the Patriot League. Young will return to her alma mater for the first time since becoming Villanova’s head coach on Feb. 23rd. The former Tewaaraton Award finalist looks to avenge a 16-3 loss from last season while the Tigers concluded the year ranked No. 20 in the IWLCA Coaches poll with an 8-7 overall record.

Villanova opens the home portion of their schedule the following week against Central Connecticut on Saturday, March 2nd in Villanova Stadium. The Wildcats face the Blue Devils for the first time since 2009 when Villanova defeated CCS 13-5. Just four days later, the ‘Cats make the short trek to Philadelphia, Pa. for a contest against Drexel on March 6th at Vidas Field.

The Wildcats round out their non-conference schedule with a trio of contests against Mount St. Mary’s, Columbia and Davidson on March 9th, 13th and 16th. Villanova hosts The Mount and the Wildcats at home on consecutive weekends and will travel to New York, N.Y. to face Columbia for a midweek matchup.

On Friday, March 22nd, Villanova heads to future BIG EAST Conference opponent Marquette to face the Golden Eagles for their inaugural season. 2013 marks the first year of Division I play for MU as they compete as an independent before joining the BIG EAST conference for the 2014 season. Two days later on Sunday, March 24th, the Wildcats trek to South Bend, Ind. to face Notre Dame for the conclusion of their Midwest away series. The Fighting Irish finished 2012 ranked No. 8/9 in the IWLCA Coaches and DeBeers Media polls and advanced to the NCAA Tournament before falling to eventual 2012 National Champions Northwestern, 12-7, in the first round.

Villanova returns home on Friday, April 5th and Sunday, April 7th to host the Syracuse Orange and the Connecticut Huskies for a pair of weekend contests. The Orange are coming off their best season in program history after advancing to the NCAA Finals before falling to Northwestern 9-7 in the championship match. The Huskies revisit the Wildcats at Villanova Stadium after defeating VU 13-6 in Storrs, Conn. last season. UConn finished the year with a 10-6 overall record while going 6-2 in the BIG EAST.

Rounding out the month of April, Villanova faces Rutgers, Loyola, Georgetown, Cincinnati and Louisville on April 13th, 19th, 21st, 26th and 28th for the conclusion of the regular season. Loyola and Georgetown finished 2012 ranked No. 7 and 9in the national polls, respectively, while the Greyhounds advanced to the NCAA Quarterfinals with a 14-6 overall record and rated 10th in the final NCAA RPI release. Villanova defeated Cincinnati 17-10 and Louisville 9-8 in overtime for their two conference victories last season and look to keep up their win streak against their BIG EAST rivals.

Villanova returns 26 letterwinners and welcomes 15 newcomers for the 2012-2013 academic year. The Wildcats concluded the 2012 slate with a 4-12 overall record and 2-6 result in the BIG EAST Conference.
