Garden City (NY) rising senior goalie Matt Cortese has committed to play Division I lacrosse at Lafayette College.

Matt Cortese log:

Matt Cortese

High School: Garden City High School, NY

Graduation Year: 2013

Position: Goalie

College Choice: Lafayette College

Club Affiliation: Long Island Sting Black

Major lacrosse honors, camps: All-Star at Battle of the Hotbeds, and ECLC at Dartmouth. Attended Jake Reed’s Nike Blue Chip, National Invitational 175, and the Brine Shootout.

Academic Honors: Member of the National Honor Society, member of the Miracle Club (Cancer Fundraiser), and St. Anne’s Respite (Church organization for Down’s Syndrome and Autistic Children)

What will you major in/study? Either Economics or Engineering.

Why did you choose Lafayette? “I chose the school because Lafayette is excellent academically. I felt most comfortable on Lafayette’s campus. I really enjoy the smaller school setting, and it is very rare to have multiple Division 1 varsity programs at a liberal arts school. In addition, I saw that all the coaches on staff share my level of competitiveness, and I can’t wait to be on the field with them. Playing in the Patriot League and playing at our home Stadium will be outrageous.”

What is your outlook for next season? “As for the 2013 season, I believe that we as a team will be very successful. Despite the loss of multiple great players from last year, I feel that we have a great deal of returning talent.

“Our coaching staff always finds ways for us to be successful, and I hope we can accomplish the same feat as last year, the NY State Championship. It’s going to require the team to put in a lot of work during the off season, but I know that we are more than capable of doing that.”

Other schools considered? Bowdoin, Boston University, Dartmouth, Middlebury, Tufts, and Amherst.

Additional Comments: “I want to Thank my Mom and Dad for supporting me in Lacrosse since second grade and throughout the recruiting process. I also want to thank Coach (ken) Miller (LI Sting Coach) as well as Coach Finnell (GCHS Coach) who both have supported me throughout the recruiting process.”

Maple Zone Sports and Fitness Complex, the official sponsor for Phillylacrosse.com Boys’ Recruits, congratulates Matt Cortese.
