From Press Release

University of Cincinnati head lacrosse coach Gina Oliver (Pottstown) was one of five Philly players named to the 36-player roster for the 2012-14 United States Women’s National Senior Lacrosse Team, US Lacrosse announced Sunday

Oliver, entering her first year at the helm of the UC program, is one of three collegiate head coaches to make the roster and one of 10 who were a part of the 2009 U.S. World Cup champions’ team.

“I am so excited and extremely grateful to be given this opportunity once again,” Oliver said. “The selection committee had a tough job in choosing 36 out of an unbelievable 82. I am glad I showed enough of my competitive edge to make the team. I look forward to building from here and continuing to compete.”

The announcement came after a three-day tryout featuring more than 80 of the top women’s lacrosse players in the country. The team of 36 will serve as the training team pool for the team that will defend Team USA’s 2009 gold medal at the 2013 Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) World Cup in Oshawa, Ontario.

The other Philly players include defenders Kelly Barnes (Radnor, Georgetown) and Kristen Carr (Delaware assistant coach) and attack players Michelle Tumolo (Clearview Regional, Syracuse) and Holly McGarvie (Princeton) and

Oliver first made the U.S. National Team in 2004 as a junior at Ohio State and helped the team win gold in the 2009 World Cup while earning All-World honors. After taking one year off intending on retiring, Oliver made the decision to return to the field one last time.

In total, 82 players representing 34 institutions participated in final tryouts on the campus of the University of Maryland Baltimore-County from July 27-29 in Catonsville, Md. These individuals were evaluated by the U.S. women’s national team coaching staff, led by coach Ricky Fried, and the U.S. women’s national team selection committee, chaired by Anne Phillips. The roster is comprised of representatives from 19 schools and includes 11 newcomers to the U.S. women’s national team program.

The team will come together for several training events before the final 18-player FIL World Cup roster is announced in February 2013, including Stars & Stripes weekend (Calif.) in October 2012 and Champion Challenge (Fla.) in January 2013. The team will also conduct numerous national team player clinics throughout the year at various sites around the country.
