The Philadelphia Wings have announced that All-Stars Brodie Merrill and Dan Dawson will be speaking at area high schools and to club teams on the importance of a positive, healthy lifestyle as an athlete in response to a recent NCAA study on drug and alcohol use at U.S. colleges.

“We are excited to bring this important topic to our local teams to help improve the apparent high incidence of drug/alcohol abuse seen at colleges across the U.S.,” says Michael French, Wings president and co-owner. “Our partners, Bryn Mawr Trust, eMoney Advisor, Reebok and Evolve IP, have joined us in championing this speaking series and in unison, we believe we can effectively raise awareness and bring education to lacrosse players in the greater Philadelphia area.”

Entitled, “A Lacrosse Wake-Up Call”, this speaking series will address fitness, nutrition, peak performance management as well as factors that deter an athlete’s ability to perform; including drugs and alcohol.

“It’s important that we, as professional athletes and role models, educate our youth on the temptations and consequences of substance use and abuse. We need to be as proactive as we can so our youth are able to make educated choices and reach their goals in the future,” says Dawson, the 2009 National Lacrosse League MVP and widely regarded as one of the best box lacrosse players in the world.

Dawson will be joined by Merrill, the Wings Captain and a two-time NLL Transition Player of the Year who also stars for the Hamilton Nationals of Major League Lacrosse.

“We couldn’t think of two more suitable players than Dawson and Merrill, both very accomplished athletes and solid leaders in the lacrosse world, to communicate this very important message to up and coming players,” adds Wings co-owner Brad Brewster.

“I applaud the Philadelphia Wings organization for taking a leadership role in educating our youth about the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse. The Bryn Mawr Trust team is honored to partner with the Wings in educating young people about this very serious problem”, says Ted Peters, chairman and CEO of Bryn Mawr Trust.

The first Wings Wake-Up Calls will be hosted this month by Souderton Area High School, Council Rock South High School and the Upper Bucks Knights.

High schools and other interested clubs may contact the Wings’ Director of Marketing, Nikki Varoutsos, for more information and how to book a speaking session on this important topic at nvaroutsos@comcast-spectacor.com.
