PA Independent Schools Girls’ championship: Episcopal Academy comes back to defeat Notre Dame, 9-7

Alexandra Silvera scored three goals while Madison Craft and Kristen Hinckley both scored twice as Episcopal Academy defeated Notre Dame, 9-7, to win the PA Independent Schools Championship for the second year in a row.

EA (16-6) dominated the transition game and overcame a 7-6 deficit midway through the second half to pull out the victory.

“It’s a great feeling,” said Silvera. “We didn’t lose hope the entire game and knew that we could pull out the win.”

This was the third meeting for the two teams, who split the season series. The EA win avenged an 18-11 loss to Notre Dame (20-3) last week in a game that forced a tie for the Inter-Ac League.

“The quote that the team chose coming into this season was ‘Prove it,’” said Episcopal coach Amanda Vos Strache. “Coming off our tough loss to Notre Dame last week, the girls really proved it and stepped up today.

“Last week was a huge wake-up call for us,” added Vos Strache. “To come out and show that last week wasn’t the team we were all season was great.”

MC Curran added two goals and Lynda Michaels notched five assists for EA. Lindsey Reder made seven saves in net.

Episcopal’s defense also was strong, particularly against Notre Dame standout midfielder Kristen Bandos. Bandos was limited to two goals on the day after scoring eight in the last meeting.

“Our defense had a very strict game-plan today,” said defender Kelly Martellucci. “Shutting (Kristen) Bandos down really helped us out because she scored on us so much last game.”

Along with Bandos, Nora McCallion tallied three goals and an assist. Carlianne McCabe and Delaney Tuite both scored a goal while Tori Sudjian had eight saves in net.
