Men’s lacrosse: Mangan steps down as Lafayette lacrosse coach

From Press Release

Following his 10th season at the helm of the Lafayette men’s lacrosse program, Terry Mangan has stepped down as the Leopards’ Head Coach.

“Terry is a valuable asset to our lacrosse program and community,” Director of Athletics Bruce McCutcheon said. “I am saddened by his decision to leave Lafayette. He will be difficult to replace.”

Mangan will serve as the Regional Director for PreGame Lacrosse, a national recruiting education and evaluation service, which was founded in 2011 by former college lacrosse coaches Jim Stagnitta and Tony Seaman. Mangan’s resignation becomes effective June 1, 2012.

“It is with a heavy heart that I am leaving Lafayette, but I am excited about this new opportunity and moving on to the next chapter,” Mangan said. “I have been very lucky to have coached such great kids and to have worked with terrific assistant coaches. My fellow coaches, administrators and support staff have made Lafayette truly a great place to be a coach.”

Mangan, who was the 2010 Patriot League Coach of the Year, guided Lafayette to its only Patriot League Tournament berth in program history two seasons ago. Lafayette was also ranked in both top 20 polls for eight consecutive weeks and stood as high as eighth in the nation in 2010. That season, and in 2011, Mangan had Stephan Bauer ’11 and Tom Perini ’11 named to the Tewaaraton Award Watch Lists. Perini and Steve Serling ’10 were both honored as USILA Scholar All-Americans as seniors, while Serling became the first All-America selection since James Dyson ’33 was a Second Team honoree in 1931.

This past year, Mangan coached graduating senior Doug Prusoff and rising junior Jake Hyatt, who were both named to the Academic All-Patriot League Team following the season. Mangan also mentored 55 Patriot League Academic Honor Roll selections over the past two seasons, the highest total in the league over that span.

Prior to his time on College Hill, Mangan spent two seasons at the University of Massachusetts and served as the defensive coordinator and goalkeeper coach at Hobart College from 1996-2000.

“I want to thank Coach Mangan for his selfless, dedicated service to Lafayette and our athletics program,” McCutcheon continued. “I wish him every success in his new venture.”
