Haverford School is hosting the 4th annual Checking for Cancer Lacrosse Invitational (sponsored by Nike) Saturday, when many of the top boys’ lacrosse teams will compete for on a stage that also can help save lives.

Aside from great competition, the primary purpose and motivation behind the formation of CFC is to promote awareness of Prostate, Colorectal and Testicular Cancers.

Haverford School coach John Nostrant, a prostate cancer survivor, and close friend Kevin Giblin, the coach at Georgetown Prep, created the tourney to raise awareness for early detection of the three men’s cancers and all cancer.

On the business side, CFC has raised over $80,000 in just three years, with all event profits earmarked for cancer research and for those organizations in need of special support. Last year’s total contribution of $42,000 was donated to the University of Pennsylvania – Livestrong Center of Excellence and West Philadelphia Outreach Program, the Kimmel Cancer Center, Cuddle My Kids and Great Guys Group.

The Checking for Cancer committee has focused on a uniform (jerseys and matching shorts) based on the Carolina Blue colors signifying men’s cancers. Haverford wore the Carolina Blue jersey in the inaugural event three years ago and wears the uniforms every year to honor the event and coach Nostrant and many others who have fought these diseases.

Other gear showcased today includes custom game jerseys and shorts, custom shooting shirts, custom socks, custom t-shirts, as well as the laces and helmet decals.
