Seniors Eric Rankel and Tyler McWilliams each tallied three goals as host Downingtown West defeated Abington, 13-10, today in a non-league season opener involving two teams ranked in the PA Media Rankings.

The Whippets (ranked No. 5) led, 7-3, at halftime and never allowed the seventh-ranked Ghosts to challenge.

“We really strived to play as a team today,” said Rankel. “We knew that just one player wasn’t going to be able to do it all so everyone tried to work together throughout the game.”

Tyler Keen added two goals and two assists for West while Dykan Ikkala scored two goals and Alex Cutic, had a standout game in goal with 15 saves.

Ryan Ambler was a force for Abington with five goals and one assist. Shane Dunn also chipped in with two goals and Travis O’Connor made 13 saves.

“It’s hard to stop a player like Ambler,” said Rankel of the Princeton commit. “Max Carroll worked real hard against him and we tried to contain him the best we could.”
