Men’s lacrosse: St. Joseph’s rallies for dramatic win over Quinnipiac, 8-7

From Press Release

The host Saint Joseph’s men’s lacrosse team came back from an early six-goal deficit to beat Quinnipiac, 8-7, today at Finnesey Field. Augustus Quinzani scored the go-ahead goal with 3:06 left to play.

The Bobcats controlled the first 20 minutes of action by scoring six goals and holding the Hawks scoreless. It was not until 5:06 left in the second quarter when Pat Townsend fed Bobby Hurley (St. Joseph’s Prep), right of the net as he buried the first goal. Hurley would add the second goal for the Hawks just 81 seconds later as Saint Joseph’s gathered momentum. SJU used a diving goal by Ryan McGee and a goal from Kyle Williams with just four seconds to play in the first half to make the score 6-4, in favor of Quinnipiac.

Goals by McGee and Quinzani would help Saint Joseph’s battle back to tie the game going into the fourth.

After an early Bobcat goal to start the quarter, McGee netted the Hawks seventh goal to tie the game with 4:40 on the clock. With 3:06 to play, McGee came from behind the net to find Quinzani to the left of the goal. Quinzani then fired a shot that found the bottom right of the goal and gave the Hawks the lead, 8-7. Solid defense held the lead as SJU grabbed its third win of the season.

“This was an unbelievable character win for such a resilient group of guys. To go down six and come back like that was an amazing feat,” said head coach Taylor Wray. “I tip my hat to the seniors. Griffin Ferrigan, Bobby Hurley and Augustus Quinzani all made some key plays down the stretch to give us a shot.

“We didn’t panic; we kept generating shots and battled back to gut out this win. It’s great to get our third victory of the season. We just need to continue to get better and compete everyday.”

The Hawks will get 10 days off before they resume play with CAA opponent Penn State at home, March 24. The game is scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m.
