The Drexel men’s lacrosse team earned its first victory of the season on Saturday, pulling away late for a 13-8 triumph at Albany.
Robert Church led the Dragons with five goals, including the eventual game-winner late in the third quarter. The Dragons scored four of the game’s final five goals to close out what had been a tight contest for much of the way.
Kyle Bergman added four goals and an assist for Drexel while Brendan Glynn (St. Joseph’s Prep) scored two.
The Dragons had to hold off a feisty Albany squad. Taking a 7-5 lead into the half, the Dragons scored the first goal of the second half when Brian Teuber, a senior defenseman from Penn Charter, ventured upfield and slammed in his first collegiate goal. From there, though, the Danes got two straight scores from Joe Resetarits and were within a goal at 8-7 with 4:47 to play in the third quarter.
With the Great Danes coming on strong, the Dragons stepped up. Mark Manos (Salesianum School), who finished with 14 saves, had 10 of those after halftime and allowed just one goal over the game’s final 19:47. After gaining possession following Albany’s seventh goal, the Dragons once again worked the ball to Church, who weaved his way inside and stopped the brief Albany scoring run with his fourth goal of the game, making it 9-7 Dragons with 1:34 to play in the third.
Mount St. Mary’s 12, Delaware 10
Daniel Stranix (Ridley) scored three goals as the visiting Mount opened its season by shocking the Hens.
No. 16 ranked Delaware (2-3), which dropped its third straight game, lost to Mt. St. Mary’s for the first time ever in 11 all-time meetings. The game was played under a wind advisory as gusts reached as high as 40 miles per hour during the contest.
Mt. St. Mary’s (1-0), the defending Northeast Conference champion coming off a 9-6 mark in 2011, looked sharp in its season-opener. After Delaware’s Sean Finegan scored with 6:54 left to knot the score at 9-9, the Mount reeled off three straight, taking the lead for good on a goal by Andrew Scalley with 5:19 left. Brett Schmidt scored a man-up goal three minutes later and Stranix scored his third goal of the game with 1:47 left to complete the upset.
Senior All-American candidate Grant Kaleikau led the Blue Hens with two goals and two assists while redshirt freshman Brian Kormandy scored twice and dished out an assist and senior Andrew Tanneberger contributed a goal and an assist. Blue Hen goalkeeper Chris Herbert posted nine saves while Dan Cooney won 14 of 24 faceoffs.
Princeton 12, Hofstra 6
Tom Schreiber had three goals and four assists, Mike MacDonald added three goals while Tucker Shanley and Jeff Froccaro each scored twice for the Tigers in an impressive opening-day win over the Pride.
Binghamton 10, Lafayette 8
Greg Allis scored three goals for the Leopards (1-1)
