Around the NCAA in men’s D1: Philly players Fleming, Warden, Rankel, Still, Sankey help teams earn Saturday victories

Colin Fleming (St. Joseph’s Prep) scored three goals to spark UMass to a 9-3 victory over Ohio State Saturday in a battle of highly-ranked men’s Division I teams.

The Minutemen (3-0) are ranked No. 8 while Ohio State, coming off a key win over Denver, fell to 3-1. Shawn Kaplan (Plymouth Whitemarsh) was 7 of 15 at the face-off X for the Buckeyes.

Fairfield 9, Bryant 8, 2OT

Eric Warden (Garnet Valley) had three goals and an assist and Gordie Wells (La Salle) had two caused turnovers as Fairfield improved to 2-0.

Cody Isdaner (Episcopal Academy) had three goals and long pole Mason Poli (Downingtown East) had a goal and an assist while freshman defenseman Connor Dent (St. Joseph’s Prep) had a groundball and a caused turnover for Bryant.

Robert Morris 17, Air Force 14

Long pole Tyler Rankel (Downingtown West) had three groundballs and a caused turnover and Dave Morton (Hill School) added two assists to lead Robert Morris.

Keith Dreyer (Malvern Prep) dished three assists for the Air Force.

Yale 19, St. John’s 6

Colin Still (Penn Charter) had a goal and an assist and Cole Yeager (Radnor) won 8 of 14 face-offs for Yale in its opener.

North Carolina 9, Navy 8

UNC freshman Joey Sankey (Penn Charter) scored a goal with his team down 7-3 that sparked a 6-1 run as the Tar Heels rallied to defeat the upset-minded Midshipmen.

Loyola 13, Towson 6

Matt Hughes (Central Bucks East) had a goal and an assist for the losing Tigers.

Denver 17, Michigan 5

Jeff Chu (Conestoga) scored once for Michigan in defeat.
