Trailing by five goals midway through the second half, the Temple lacrosse team rattled off six unanswered goals to earn a 12-11 victory at Rutgers (0-1) and remain unbeaten on the young season.
Junior Stephany Parcell (Interboro) scored four goals for the Owls (2-0) while sophomore Kelly Syphard also notched a hat trick with three goals.
“It was an incredible team win,” said head coach Bonnie Rosen. “We really showed our resilience and our maturity today. Individuals stepped up to make things happen, and it was a different group (from the last game) and that’s exaclty what we’re lookng for. It was just a matter of gaining possession and taking our time on attack. We were a little too anxious to score early on.”
Ali Steinberg had two goals and an assist while Megan McGinley (Moorestown) had one goal and two assists in a 5-0 Rutgers run to start the game. Less than 10 minutes remained in the first half before Temple finally got on the board, but once they did, the goals kept coming.
Parcell scored three times over a six-minute span, with the run broken just once by a Rutgers goal. Charlotte Swavola (Cheltenham) assisted on Parcell’s second and third goals as the Owls got to within 6-3, and Syphard converted on a free position shot with just 33 seconds left in the first half to put Temple down by just two at the break.
After an early second-half goal for Rutgers’ Stephanie Anderson, Syphard struck again to keep Temple within two, 7-5, but over the next eight minutes the Scarlet Knights scored four goals to Temple’s one and took an 11-6 lead with 18 minutes remaining. The lone goal for Temple in that span was once again scored by Syphard.
Down five and needing a big rally for the second time in the game, the Owls came through. Missy Schweitzer (Owen J. Roberts) scored her first goal of the year with 14:38 on the clock to start what would become an impressive, 6-0 run for Temple. Jaymie Tabor (Downingtown West) scored both the second and third goals of the run, and Jackie Mercer got Temple within one on an unassisted score with 6:50 remaining.
Parcell’s fourth goal of the contest tied the score at 11-11 with 6:10 on the clock. The next few minutes saw little in the way of offense for either team, but Stephanie Markunas (Ridley) put in the game-winning goal for Temple with 3:31 remaining.
Temple goalkeeper Tess Bishop, who made 11 saves overall, came up with a big one just before the final minute to preserve the win.
“Kelly really got us going, she was amazing,” said Rosen. “Tess had another fantastic game in the cage and came up big when we needed her to. When it came down to the end, we just refused to lose.”
Drexel 18, St. Joseph’s 10
Amanda Norcini (Conestoga) led the Dragons (2-0) with four goals and an assist and five others scored two goals in the win over the Hawks.
Grace Dinn led St. Joe’s (0-1) with five goals and an assist.
Lafayette 18, Wagner 7
Ana White (Strath Haven) had four goals and two assists as the Leopards (2-0) moved to their best start since they opened the 1983 campaign with consecutive wins.
