Schedule, times released for ‘Checking for Cancer’ Invitational April 14 at Haverford School

February 19, 2012 by Chris Goldberg

Phillylacrosse.com, Posted 2/19/12

The Haverford School will be hosting the 4th Annual “Checking for Cancer” Lacrosse Invitational on Saturday, April 14th. The day will feature a full slate of high school varsity boys and girls games with numerous nationally ranked boys’ teams in the mix.

Georgetown Prep coach Kevin Giblin (left) and Haverford School coach John Nostrant, two close friends since their college lacrosse days, are cancer survivors

Aside from great competition, the primary purpose and motivation behind the formation of CFC is to promote awareness of Prostate, Colorectal and Testicular Cancers. Haverford School Head Coach John Nostrant, a prostate cancer survivor, remarks, “We have a unique opportunity here. The tournament provides us a great venue to bring people to our campus to watch great games, and hopefully while they are here, they will spend a little time at the information tents to learn how to protect themselves. Any family who has been affected by cancer will tell you, early detection is critical.”

Nostrant is joined in spirit with his dear friend and Washington College lacrosse teammate, Georgetown Prep Head Coach Kevin Giblin, himself a colon cancer survivor. Over the course of time, both coaches have exhibited the strength and character to successfully conquer the cancer battlefield. In doing so, CFC honors Nostrant, Giblin and the many men and families who have faced their ultimate struggle against cancer.

On the business side, CFC has raised over $80,000 in just three years, with all event profits earmarked for cancer research and for those organizations in need of special support. Last year’s total contribution of $42,000 was donated to the University of Pennsylvania – Livestrong Center of Excellence and West Philadelphia Outreach Program, the Kimmel Cancer Center, Cuddle My Kids and Great Guys Group.

The 4th Annual Checking for Cancer Lacrosse Invitational will be successful because of our Corporate Sponsors, Patrons, Program Book Advertisers and a $5.00 and up Admission Donation. We thank everyone in advance for all their terrific support. Also, and most importantly, we thank you for your interest in learning more about male cancers and your strong voice in encouraging early detection.
