From Press Release and Staff Report

Ohio State midfielder Gabby Capuzzi (Archbishop Carroll) enjoyed a brilliant all-around game today as the 18th-ranked Buckeyes upset No. 6 Stanford, 14-10, at Laird Q. Cagan Stadium in Palo Alto, Calif.

The Buckeyes get off to a 2-0 start to the season for the first time since 2009, while the Cardinal drops to 0-2 with a pair of losses to ranked ALC teams in the opening weekend.

Capuzzi had a game-high four goals and an assist as well as five draw controls and a trio of groundballs and caused turnovers as the senior captain extended her early-season team leads in goals (7), draws (8) and caused turnovers (6). In total, seven Buckeyes found the back of the net, while freshman goalie Tori DeScenza highlighted the opposite end of the field by finishing her first complete game with 12 saves.

Stanford struck first and the teams went on to swap goals over the first 15 minutes of the opening stanza. Jackie Cifarelli broke the 3-3 tie at 14:03 off an assist by Hallie Keselman, however, and Ohio State went on to build a 5-3 lead before eventually heading into the half up three, 7-4. Cifarelli and Capuzzi each had a pair of goals in the first half, while Stanford’s Catherine Swanson also scored a pair to pace the Cardinal attack.

Ohio State gave up three goals at the start of the second half as Stanford climbed back into the contest and tied it 7-7 within the first three minutes. The Buckeyes scored three of the next four goals, pulling ahead 10-7, and would not relinquish the lead for the remainder of the contest. Five OSU players added scores in the second-half run, including senior captain Alayna Markword, who had an unassisted tally with 4:57 left on the clock to extend her goal-scoring streak to 24 games, after a first-half assist already assured her point-scoring streak of continuing to a 50th-consecutive game.
