From Press Releases and Staff Reports

The fifth-ranked Duke women’s lacrosse team began the 2012 season with a program single-game goals record in its 25-3 victory over Bucknell Saturday afternoon at Koskinen Stadium.

Despite rain throughout the majority of the contest, the Blue Devils’ totaled 25 goals to best the program’s previous record of 24 set against St. Joseph’s on April 23, 2006. Duke freshman Kerrin Maurer also tied the school single-game record with five assists to go along with three goals in her collegiate debut as the rookie led all scorers.

Sixteen Blue Devils registered a point in the contest as senior Kim Wenger (Great Valley) had two goals and an assist, senior attack Amanda Jones (Germantown Academy) had two goals, freshman Taylor Trimble (Episcopal Academy) had two goals and senior Emma Hamm (Baldwin School) had a goal and an assist.

For Bucknell, Madison Hurwitz (Council Rock South) scored once and freshman Chloe Chou (Agnes Irwin) had three assists.

“I’m really pleased with the fact that we’ve only practiced 16 days but we played a complete game from one end to the other,” said Duke head coach Kerstin Kimel (Haverford High). “What we saw as coaches was a lot of what we worked on manifesting itself on the field. That’s good to see. Every game will be an opportunity to learn a little bit more and to define ourselves a little bit more. I thought today was a great way to start the year off.”

Senior goaltender Mollie Mackler made five saves in the contest, while her Bucknell counterparts, Caroline O’Neill and Katherine Fraile, combined for seven saves.

Additionally, seven members of Duke’s freshmen class saw action Saturday with the rookies combining for 10 goals and five assists.
