John Austin, Dom Sebastian and Nick Diachenko tallied two goals a piece as host Delaware opened the 2011 NCAA college lacrosse season today by defeating Detroit, 13-5, in a non-conference game at cold and rainy Delaware Stadium.
Eric Smith added a goal and three assists for the defending Colonial Athletic Association champion Blue Hens while Sean Finegan, Nick Elsmo and Anthony Ruiz each had a goal and an assist. Dan Cooney (seven groundballs, won 15 of 21 face-offs), Kevin Kaminski (Strath Haven) and Carter Bloor each scored once for Delaware.
Noah Fossner was outstanding in goal, turning back 12 saves and allowing just three goals.
Detroit Mercy (0-1) scored all five of its goals on extra man opportunities with Shayne Adams tallying three times and Scott Harris contributing a goal and two assists.
