Philadelphia Freedom (8th Grade) enjoys successful run to semifinals at Winter Nationals Indoor Lacrosse championships

The Philadelphia Freedom 8th Grade team enjoyed a standout performance Thursday when it reached the semifinals of the Winter Nationals Indoor Lacrosse Championships the Indoor Sports Pavilion in Randolph, N.J.

Freedom went 2-1 in pool play with wins over STEPS (N.J.) and the Long Island Outlaws and a loss to Long Island Express. Freedom was seeded 3rd for the championship round and faced the powerful Express in a semi-final rematch after bowing to the Long Island squad handily in pool play.

Freedom overcame a 4-0 deficit in the semis and tied the game before falling to the eventual tournament champs, 8-5.

Freedom was led in scoring for the day by Eli Goforth with 5 goals and 1 assist, Alex Wagner with 3 goals and 4 assists, Simon Butala with 3 goals, and Drew Rafferty with 3 goals. Five other players also scored throughout the day.

The defense was led by Jon Westlake along with Saunders Healy and Ryan McNulty, while goaltender Colin Miller garnered 10, 5, and 7 saves in pool play and 12 saves in the semifinal loss to the Express.

Freedom 2016 is coached by Bob Miller, Charlie Rafferty, Paul Butala, Alan Butcher and Bryant University All-American defenseman Mason Poli.
