York College men’s lacrosse head coach Brandon Childs has named the Spartans team captains for the 2012 season as seniors BJ Blaker (Henderson), John Powell, and Patrick Glenn (Ridley) are set to lead the Green and White into the 2012 campaign.
Blaker, a midfielder, returns for his second season as a captain for the Spartans. The midfielder possesses outstanding college experience having played in each of the Green and White’s contests over the past three seasons. He garnered All-Capital Athletic Conference honors after a successful 2010 slate, following up that season with a 21-goal, seven-assist showing over each of York’s 16 contests in 2011.
“BJ always knows what to do on the field to lift his teammates up,” Childs said. “He is constantly working to make practice better.”
Glenn, a defenseman, will lead the York defense in 2012 after playing in 11 games a year ago. He will be a disruptive force for the Spartans this season as he has great size and strength.
“Pat Glenn has proven this fall that he may have more desire than anyone on the roster to have a big year in 2012,” Childs said. “Pat has been working hard every day on and off the field to become the motivational leader on the defensive end. He is always the first to arrive and the last to leave. Perhaps what the coaching staff has been most impressed with, is the way he has taken the freshmen under his wing.”
Powell also returns for his second run as a Spartan captain. The midfielder brings a level of toughness that will help the Green and White this season. A year ago, he saw action in 13 contests, notching one goal.
“John Powell is one of the smartest players that I have coached,” Childs said. “John is always thinking of ways to improve his game but more importantly he is always working to improve our team game. He is a leader in every sense of the word.”
The Spartans open the 2012 season with a home game against Randolph-Macon on Saturday, February 11, at 1:00 pm.
