Malvern Prep junior midfielder Gavin Weaver has made a verbal commitment to play Division I lacrosse at the University of Delaware.

Weaver was a member of a Malvern Prep squad that placed second in the Inter-Ac League and the Inter-Ac Invitational last year, going 14-6 and finishing 25th in the country in the ESPN RISE POWERADE FAB 50.

Weaver plays club lacrosse for Mesa Fresh 2013 and Team HEADstrong. He also was named to the Dirty 66 All-Star squad for unsung heroes.

Weaver is the second Friars junior to commit to Delaware; defenseman Jared Horoski committed to the Newark college and head coach Bob Shillinglaw earlier in the month. Three other Malvern juniors have committed to D1 colleges: goalie Matt Barrett (Virginia), midfielder Joey Carlini (Johns Hopkins) and defenseman Chad Rafferty (Maryland). The Friars also have six D1 recruits in the senior class.

The six seniors include midfielder PJ Finley and defenseman Jack Sheridan (Notre Dame), midfielder Russell Atkinson and LSM/defenseman Kevin Samolsky (Naval Academy), defenseman Eddie Morris (Johns Hopkins) and midfielder Fran McArdle (Quinnipiac). Also, attackman Jake Glancy and midfielder Graeme Weaver, Gavin’s older brother, have committed to Washington and Lee).

Weaver and Horoski will play for the same coach – Shillinglaw – who coached Malvern Prep coach David Metzbower (Class of 1986) at Delaware. Metzbower also was a three-year assistant under Shillinglaw before moving to a long-time role as assistant at Princeton.

Also from Philly, Conestoga junior Carson Scott has committed to Delaware.

What will you major in/study?
Business or Pre-Med

Why did you choose school? “When I stepped on campus, I said to my dad I knew I wanted to go there. I like how the campus is spread out. I like the class size; I learn better with smaller classes. The facilities are amazing and the coaches are great.”

What is your HS team’s outlook for next year? “The way we finished last year, obviously we need to make the next step and finish out the season the right way. We have great captains – Eddie Morris, Jack Sheridan and my brother, Graeme. With the help of coach Metzbower, hopefully we can win the Inter-Ac title and the Inter-Ac tourney.

Other comments: “I want to thank coach Metzbower for everything he has done in the recruiting process. I also want to thank my HEADstrong and Mesa coaches, my family and my brother for supporting me through the entire process.”
