Archbishop Spalding (Md.) rising senior long stick midfielder Joey Prieto has made a verbal commitment to play Division I lacrosse at the University of Delaware.
Prieto scooped over 50 groundballs for the Cavaliers in 2011, helping them finish He plays club lacrosse for Propel and has also played for Smart Link, a select team from Anne Arundel County.
Prieto plans to major in business at Delaware and eventually go to law school.
“I chose Delaware because it was a great school in a good location not far from home and the coaching staff is amazing,” said Prieto, who switched from goalie to LSM only a year ago. “I’m really excited to play under (Head) Coach (Bob Shillinglaw) and (Assistant) Coach (Greg) Carroll.”
Shillinglaw, entering his 34th year, guided the Blue Hens to their second straight Colonial Athletic Association championship last year.
Prieto has high expectations for the 2012 season.
“We are looking really good, we have great talent, (and) good leaders,” said Prieto. “We just need to bring it all together as a team and I think we’re going to surprise a lot of people this year.”
