Pittsford (N.Y.) rising senior goalie Jaclyn Fraum has made a verbal commitment to play Division I lacrosse at Villanova University.

Pittsford (N.Y.) rising senior goalie Jaclyn Fraum has committed to Villanova

Fraum was part of a Pittsford team that reached the New York Class A finals and finished 21-1 overall. The Panthers placed first in the New York A Section 5 division and went undefeated in its conference (14-0) Fraum was named an Academic All-American and received second team all-county honors.

Fraum, who plays club lacrosse for Lady Roc lacrosse and received the Brine Unsung Hero Award at the state championship game, has also been on the Honor Roll at Pittsford for every semester.

While at Villanova, Fraum plans to major in Communications/Public Relations.

“I chose Villanova because of its strong academics,” said Fraum. “When starting the recruiting process, I told my family and myself that I would choose a college for academics and then for lacrosse. With this in mind, Villanova seemed to be a perfect fit.

“I always wanted a mid-sized school near a large city so it seemed right that Villanova would be where I ended up. I instantly loved the campus and overall environment when I first visited.”

Villanova strugged in 2011, finishing the season with a 5-11 record. Fraum will hope to be a part of the rebuilding of the women’s lacrosse program at Villanova under new coach Julie Young. Young was previously the coach for three years at Haverford College, where she built up a power in the Centennial Conference.

Young led Haverford to a 13-5 record in 2010, the highest single-season record in the program’s history, and 10-7 record in 2011. Prior to Haverford, Young was an assistant coach at Penn, where she coached for six years and helped lead the Quakers to the NCAA Final in 2008.

Pittsford’s 2011 season was full of only highs, which made losing in the state finals even harder for Fraum.

“My high school season was exceptionally exciting as we won sectionals for the second consecutive year and made it to the New York State finals for the first time in the history of my high school program,” said Fraum. “Our first loss was in the state finals that ended in the last seconds of overtime after over seven hours of thunder and rain delays.

“Once you get the taste of winning, losing is never an option, so falling short of winning states was not a great feeling.”

After nearly winning it all in 2011, Fraum will only be satisfied with a title in 2012.

“There is only way to end the year and that is to win the state tournament,” she said. “Coming so close this year to the final seconds of overtime in the state finals and watching our goal slip away was not the way we wanted it to end.

“Taking that heartbreaking loss only makes our team stronger with hopes of returning to states next year and taking home the title without falling short.”
