Bishop Shanahan rising senior attack Kathryn Skahan has made a verbal commitment to play Division I lacrosse at Temple University.
Skahan was a US Lacreosse Academic All-American and a Third Team Ches-Mont League pick in 2011 when she helped Bishop Shanahan to the District 1 playoffs. She played on the Philly Under Armour Underclassmen team.
Skahan sees the importance of giving back to the community, so she is going on the Appalachia Service Project for a week in Kentucky this summer.
Skahan, who plays club lacrosse for PA Express, also earned Academic All American and was a Philly Showcase All Star pick. She also is captain of the field hockey team.
Skahan plans to major in Business at Temple, coached by recent US Lacrosse Hall of Fame inductee Bonnie Rosen (Harriton High alum).
Skahan was hoping to stay local for college if she found the right school, and luckily Temple had all of the attributes that she was looking for.
“I wanted an excellent business school in a large city,” said Skahan. “When I went on the Junior days, I really liked the girls and coaching staff. I wanted to be in Philly, and it’s a great fit academically and athletically for me.”
Another Bishop Shanahan rising senior committed to Temple is midfielder Summer Jaros.
Other rising seniors committed to Temple are Villa Maria defender Maddie McTigue, Garnet Valley rising senior attack Kara Stroup, and North Penn attack Brenda McDermott. From Central PA, Temple commits include Lampeter Strasburg attack/midfield Bridget Hufnagel and Manheim Township midfielder Megan Pinkerton.
Bishop Shanahan finished the 2011 season with a league record of 7-4 and 9-7 overall. The Eagles then lost by one goal to Strath Haven in the first round of the District 1 tournament.
“The 2011 season was definitely thrilling,” said Skahan. “It will be tough to replace the five of our seniors that are playing lacrosse in college but we are hoping to make it to the playoffs again.”
Skahan wished to thank her coaches at Bishop Shanahan, head coach Kevin Goforth and assistant Christine McKinney, and her PA Express coaches, Cathy Swartz and Jen Anderson.
