Team Philly coach Mike Friel is hoping his squad gets off to a good start when it opens play Friday in the annual Under Armour Underclassmen Games at Towson University’s Johnny Unitas Stadium.

Friel was head coach last year when a highly-talented Philly team took an early lead and then dropped a heartbreaking 10-9 decision to Baltimore in the opening game of the tourney. Still reeling from that loss, Philly fell to Upstate New York, 9-8, in overtime in the second game that day.

Philadelphia ended up with a just a 1-3 record and a sixth-place finish in the eight-team field. Friel said that first loss to Baltimore seemed to set the team back throughout the tourney.

This year, Friel, the former coach at Springfield-Delco, will take another highly-touted squad to Towson to compete in a field that has expanded to 10 teams. Philly is playing in the Red Division with Long Island, Upstate New York, New England and the South all-stars. Philly opens Friday against Upstate New York at noon.

“You do have to win right away; you can’t slip up” said Friel, who is being assisted by Brian Samson (Conestoga head coach) and Tom Lemieux (Springfield-Delco). “Our whole mindset is to compete from the beginning. We are good, no doubt about it and I am going down there to win the whole thing.”

The Philly roster is dotted with players headed to top Division I programs and two highly-touted rising juniors from La Salle, attackman Matt Rambo and midfielder Sean Coleman. Six of the players – attackmen Connor Frisina (committed to Delaware), Bradleee Lord (Maryland) and Tyler Brooke (Maryland), midfielder Adam Goins (Notre Dame), defenseman Jamie Ikeda (Duke) and sophomore goalie Robbie Zonino – are from Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association champion Conestoga and four – midfielder Sam Rohr (Penn), LSM/midfielder Will McNamara (Virginia), face-off specialist Will Gural and defenseman Warner Bailey (Georgetown) – are from undisputed national champion Haverford School.

The rest of the team features defensemen Ryan Guittare (Penn State) and Ryan Lehman (Maryland) of Garnet Valley, defensemen Eddie Morris (Johns Hopkins) and Jack Sheridan (Notre Dame) of Malvern Prep, defensemen Chris Panichelli (Drexel/Bishop Shanahan) and Matt Ward (Ridley), goalie Steve Brodeur (Lehigh/Strath Haven), face-off specialist Mike Barnes (Drexel/Radnor), midfielders Tyler Earley (Penn Charter) and Eric Rankel (Robert Morris/Downingtown West) and attackmen Trevor Kupecky (rising junior/Upper Merion) and Parker Self (Central Bucks East).

“I think we will be very good defensively,” said Friel. “I was super impressed with them and since we are bringing eight of them we are going to press out and get after them and let them do what they do best.”

In goal, Friel said he’ll use both Brodeur and Zonino, but settle on one if a layer shines.

“One thing we are going to do is ride the hot goalie,” Friel said. “We want to play everybody, but at crunch time we’ll use the 10 players that really getting after it.”
