Ridley senior goalie Cam Carney has committed to play Division III lacrosse at Widener University.

Ridley's Cam Carney has committed to Widener

Carney helped Ridley finish 19-5 and advance to the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association tournament for the first time this year

Carney, an Honor Roll student, was accepted into the Business Honors Program at Widener.

“I chose Widener because it is a premier school for both athletics and academics,” he said. “The lacrosse team always competes with the top programs. I have relatives that go there which heightened my liking to the campus and the team.”

This year Widener (15-3) won its sixth Middle Atlantic Conference title in seven years under coach Jamie Lockard and advanced to the NCAA tournament. Carney joins New Hope-Solebury attackman John Cimbalista and Haverford High midfielder Nick Chambers as Lockard’s Philly recruits.

Carney was pleased that Ridley became a power in 2011.

“I look back on our past season by looking at how well our team bonded,” he said. “We brought in a lot of new varsity players who were not used to the varsity level game, but we were able to make the adjustment.

“When we came together, we could play some really good lacrosse. We surprised a lot of people by going as far as we did. It was an honor to be apart of the first Ridley team to make it into the PIAA state tournament. Hopefully this is just a new beginning for Ridley Lacrosse.”
