Sophomore goalie Aubrey Faggen made 15 saves while Emma Dahle and Ashley Tedesco combined for eight goals to lead host Friends’ Central to a 9-7 victory over Germantown Friends today, giving the Phoenix their second straight Friends Schoosl League championship.
Dahle collected four goals, four forced turnovers, three draw controls and an assist while Tedesco had four goals and an assist. Allie Wirshba scored once and Becca Dahle contributed four assists, four draw controls, three groundballs and two forced turnovers.
Anchoring the defensive unit were senior captains Jaime Hyman and Claire Harris, while Maria Pizzini (two forced turnovers, one interception, two ground balls) and Kate Forrest (three key contols late in the game) made big contributions.
Friends’ Central, which led, 6-2, at halftime, finished the year at 10-6-1.
Iris Williamson led GFS with five goals.
This year’s title was sweet for Friends’ Central because the Phoenix lost nine seniors and played with a young team that featured only a handful of seniors and juniors.
“I think that’s the best part of it,” said Becca Dahle. “Everyone thought this would be a rebuilding year.
“We didn’t look at it that way. We came back and did the same things we did last year, just with a new set of people.”
Dahle said Faggen’s effort was the key.
“Of course, our goalie was awesome,” Dahle said. “She had 15 saves and only allowed seven goals, which is amazing. We didn’t miss many shots.”
Emma Dahle said the big start was crucial.
“We went out on fire in the first half and they chipped away, but we managed to hold it together, especially in the last 10 minutes,” said the freshman. “We got real good efforts from everyone. We had a lot of forced turnovers and that helped give us more offensive opportunities.”
Friends’ Central had only three seniors and three juniors this year. Only five starters had returned.
“The team lost nine seniors, so it was a completely different team from the year before,” said Emma Dahle. “But our goal all season has been to win the title again. There is a lot of competition between us and GFS, so it was great to beat them.”
“We worked really hard before the season started,” added Becca Dahle. “We played fall league and winter league. We only had five returning starters so it was really a new team. But we wanted this game today so bad.
“We played really well in the regular season game against them,” Becca Dahle said. “We were very prepared for today.
Dahle made a point to give credit to Friends’ Central coach Lauren Becker Rubin for her leadership and ability to push the players.
“Coach Rubin wanted this more than anyone else,” Dahle said. “As much as we all played for ourselves and teammates, we definitely played for her. We know how much it means to her.”
