District 1 boys’ lacrosse: Pennsbury surprises Downingtown East, 8-6, to advance to quarterfinals for first time

Luke Matthews scored three goals and Ricky Jutkiewicz had two goals and an assist while Drew Sweetland made 11 saves as visiting Pennsbury surprised Downingtown East, 8-6, Thursday night in the second round of the District 1 boys’ lacrosse playoffs.

The win advances the 13th-seeded Falcons (14-6) into the quarterfinals of district for the first time ever. They will play fifth-seeded Avon Grove – a 10-9 winner over Springfield-Delco – Saturday at Henderson High at 2 p.m.

Dan Marr and Sean Rinko led the Falcons’ defense. Josh Caven, Calvin Hopkins and Ryan McDonald each scored once.

Aaron Murphy had four goals for Downingtown East, while Ryan Poole and Kees Holterman each had one.
