Haley Wentzel scored four goals and Rachel Engler had three goals and two assists as Boyertown defeated Methacton, 13-7, tonight at Spring-Ford to claim its eighth straight Pioneer Athletic Conference championship.

The Bears (16-4) have beaten the Warriors (14-6) three consecutive times in the league finals.

Boyertown led, 5-4, after one half but dominated in the second half. Kelly Furman added two goals and two assists while Jaime Vincent and Lauren Mengel each scored twice. Lindsay Clinton made 12 saves in goal.

Boyertown coach Pam Wernersbach, whose team has only four seniors, said the Bears matured as the season progressed.

“Each year is special and this particular group was just very motivated to show all of the naysayers that Boyertown can still play,” said Wernersbach.

Boyertown, which has a 10-game winning streak, was not expected to coast to the crown since it was so young and Methactton had several Division I players and a veteran team.

“The girls had to take time to figure out how to trust each other and play according to what their roles are for this team,” Wernersbach said. “As a group we are athletic and able to cover a lot of ground..

“The girls have learned how to apply their athleticism to games, which is why we are playing better now than at the beginning of the season.”

For Methacton, Emily Kellet and Megan Nearing each scored twice while Sara Watro, Gabby Numerato and Anna Marie Warrington each scored once. Rikki Moore made nine saves.

“We only held a one goal lead at half because Methacton stuck to their game plan very well,” said Wernersbach. “In the second half we were able to get to draw controls and ground balls more and just played more focused lacrosse.

“We started to control the tempo of the game, which gave the advantage to us.”
