Kevin Clarke won 21 of 30 face-offs and scooped 16 groundballs while Aaron Murphy scored five goals as visiting Downingtown East dealt Avon Grove its first loss of the year, 14-13, tonight in a key Ches-Mont League boys’ lacrosse game,

The Devils (12-1 overall, ranked No. 4 in the PA Media Rankings) fell into second place in the Ches-Mont at 7-1. Downingtown West, which defeated Bishop Shanahan, 11-4, is 8-0 and hosts Avon Grove on Friday night,

The Cougars, meanwhile, jumped back into the race for the crown. They snapped a two-game losing streak and improved to 6-1 in the league and 10-4 overall.

Downingtown East bolted to an 8-3 halftime lead and held off a strong rally by Avon Grove in the second half.

Trey Lauletta had three goals and an assist while Kyle Lauletta had two goals and an assist and Kees Holterman scored twice for the Cougars, Derek Sell made 10 saves in goal.

“We used our size,” said Downingtown East coach Todd Cliggett. “We have really big midfielders and they are very athletic. Our kids also picked the corners; we only shot it like 20 times, but we possessed the ball well and played sound fundamental lacrosse.

“We got a big jump on them and held on. Now we need them to beat West.”

Eric Waibel led Avon Grove with five goals and Trevor Hornby added three goals and two assists while Damian Sobieski had three goals and one assist. Tommy Hamond added two goals.
