Staff Report

Malvern Prep used a smothering defense that held Garnet Valley scoreless until a minute and 32 seconds remained in the third period and the senior attack of TJ Hanzsche, Mike Dougherty and Keth Dreyer combined for six goals to lead the Friars to a surprisingly easy 8-2 victory at the 11th annual Katie Samson Lacrosse Festival Saturday at Radnor.

Garnet Valley (10-2) had entered the game ranked No. 9 in the PA Media Rankings and No. 22 in the ESPN RISE POWERADE Fab 50. Malvern Prep (10-4) was 10th in the PA Media Rankings and 40th in the ESPN Rankings.

Hanzsche (two goals, three assists) found Dougherty (two goals) at 9:11 in the first period to open the scoring. Thirty-nine seconds later Hanzsche scored unassisted. With 1:39 left in the first, Hanzsche again assisted Dougherty to put Malvern up 3-0.

Malvern’s defense, led by senior goalie Ryan McDevitt (7 saves) was the real story as it held Garnet Valley scoreless for the first half while Hanzsche scored late in the second quarter to make it 4-0.

As he has done all season Malvern Prep sophomore goalie Matt Barrett (5 saves) started the second half and the Friars came out strong as Dreyer (two goals) scored at 5:41, assisted by Hanzsche. Dreyer scored again at 2;35, assisted by Joey Carlini to make it 6-0.

Garnet Valley finally connected when Adam Rudman scored off a dish from Steve Smyrl late in the third period. The fourth-quarter faceoff was won by Malvern’s Drew Kennedy (10 of 15 f/o wins), who took six seconds to score to make it 7-1.

Garnet Valley’s Jules Raucci scored at 6:39 assisted by Benny Baiocco but Malvern’s senior defenseman Wes Pancoast finished the scoring at 5:46 of the 4th with an an end to end rush..

“We played good solid defense, our close guys did a great job” said first year Malvern Coach Dave Metzbower. “Ground balls were an issue, we need to do better in that area.”

Malvern could play the spoiler as it plays host Haverford School on Wednesday for the second time. Haverford remained undefeated as it downed previously-undefeated Conestoga, 11-6.
