The Friars improved to 9-4 overall and 6-2 in the league with the win. EA fell to 4-8 and 0-5.

TJ Hanzsche and Keith Dreyer each had a goal and an assist while Russ Atkinson and Vince Travaglini each scored once for Malvern Prep.

After the teams were tied, 2-2, in the first period, EA coach Andy Hayes inverted his midfielders on offense behind the goal and had them play catch while the MP defense zoned up out in front of the goal.

This tactic allowed EA to eat up almost 10 minutes of the second quarter with one possession. As patient as EA was, Malvern’s defense was equally patient playing a game of cat and mouse. The half ended 2-2.

“We made some adjustments at half and our defense came out on them forcing them out of their stall,” said Malvern Coach David Metzbower.

EA did score first in the third period at 9:57 as Tyler Odell (two goals) converted on a feed from Sam Lawlor. Hayes again inverted his offense and tried to milk the lead but MP’s defense played a lot more aggressively and Dougherty scored after an EA turnover on a feed from Graeme Weaver to tie the game.

With 50 seconds left in the third quarter Malvern’s Russ Atkinson dodged right down the alley and came back left handed and put Malvern up to stay, 4-3.

The fourth quarter saw four great saves by Barrett while Malvern’s Vince Travaglini scored unassisted at 10:31 and Mike Dougherty scored from Dreyer at 2:31 to seal the victory.
