Freshman Geli Carabases intercepted a pass on the defensive end, took the ball the lenghth of the field and rifled a shot from the top of the circle into the back of the net with 1:04 remaining in the game to give the Swarthmore College men’s lacrosse team (3-5) a thrilling 7-6 win over visiting Whittier 7-6 on a rainy Thursday evening from Clothier Field Stadium.

Down 4-2 early in the second half, Swarthmore rattled off four unanswered over a 20-minute span of the second half to a take 6-4 lead with less than eight minutes remaining to play. Unwilling to take the long trip back to California after a tough loss, the Poets responded, scoring two late goals, including a strike with just 2:17 left to play to tie the game 6-6.

With the Poets in possession of the ball and attacking in the Garnet defensive zone with approximately 70 seconds remaining, Carabases caused his third and final turnover of the game, picking off a pass across the middle and racing down the field unmarked for the game-winner.

Sophomores Wes Marcik and Steve Selverian (Garnet Valley) each scored two goals to lead the Garnet offense.

Freshman Jonathan Cohen had his second-consecutive strong outing for the Garnet in the goal, making eight saves. For Whittier, goalkeeper Robert Balzen was outstanding in net, making 22 saves to keep the Poets in the game.

Whitter is coached by Downinggtown High alum Brian Kelly.

Gwynedd Mercy 8, Centenary 6

Three goals from junior Craig Trueblood helped Gwynedd-Mercy secure their first league.

The Griffins (3-5, 1-0 CSAC) were able to break a 5-5 tie early in the fourth quarter after leading 3-2 at halftime.
