Catherine Bendinelli scored three goals and Jenna Mertz added two goals and an assist as visiting Villa Maria Academy used solid defense and goaltending to defeat Merion Mercy, 7-5, Tuesday in a key Athletic Association of Catholic Academies girls’ lacrosse game.

The Hurricanes (2-0, 2-0) led, 2-1, at halftime and got several key saves from goalie Heather Mazur (six stops). Samantha Ostoich and Carolyn Greisser also scored for Villa Maria.
“This win means a lot to the Villa Maria program,” said Hurricanes first-year coach Jess Chadwin. “We set the bar pretty high and now we have to follow through and work even harder.
“We played great. We played like a team; a unit. Our goalie stepped up and the defense jelled.”
Emily Corcoran had three goals for defending champion Merion Mercy (1-1, 1-1).
