Men’s weekly college honors: Hobart’s Eisenhard (L. Merion), Duke’s Wolf (L. Merion) Lehigh’s Snyder

March 24, 2011 by Chris Goldberg

Hobart sophomore defender Jake Eisenhard (Lower Merion) was named the ECAC Lacrosse League Defensive Player of the Week. Eisenhard collected four ground balls and caused four turnovers, both career-highs, in a 5-4 win over Bryant on Saturday.

Eisenhard’s effort contributed to one of the most impressive overall defensive performances by the Statesmen in recent memory. He accounted for half of the defense’s eight caused turnovers. The Hobart defense only surrendered four goals to the Bulldogs, the fewest since the Statesmen defeated Bucknell 7-2 in 2009. Hobart was successful on 20 of 21 clear attempts against Bryant with Eisenhard playing a major role in that as well.

Duke’s Wolf (L.ower Merion) is ACC Offensive Player of Week

For the second time in three weeks, Duke University freshman Jordan Wolf (Lower Merion) was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week for the week ending March 21. Wolf also earned the honor after the Blue Devils defeated Maryland in overtime on March 5.

Wolf led all Duke scorers with five goals and four assists for nine points in a 2-0 week for the Blue Devils. The newcomer from Lower Merion, Pa., led then-No. 7 Duke with four goals in a convincing 14-9 win over No. 8 North Carolina and followed that with a career-high five points from a goal and a career-best four assists against Dartmouth.

Lehigh’s Snyder is Patriot Defensive Player of Week

Following yet another dominating performance on Saturday, Lehigh sophomore midfielder Ryan Snyder (Reading native, Duke’s LC) has earned his second Patriot League award, as announced on Monday. The faceoff specialist won 13-of-15 at the X, while recording nine groundballs, to help the Mountain Hawks (4-3, 1-0 Patriot League) dominate time of possession in a 17-4 win over Presbyterian.

Snyder helped limit Presbyterian’s offensive opportunities as Lehigh went on to its largest margin of victory since a 15-2 win over Siena in 2005. The defense held the Blue Hose to only four goals, including none in the final 37:33. The last time the Mountain Hawks allowed four goals or fewer was in a 7-3 win over St. John’s in 2008.

The award is Snyder’s second defensive player of the week honor, which comes exactly one month after winning his first. For the season, Snyder has won 69.5 percent (91-of-131) of his draws and has scooped a Patriot League-leading 60 groundballs, 20 more than anyone else in the league.

Also recognized on Monday was freshman defenseman Ty Souders (Emmaus), who was among the league’s honorable mention honorees. Souders has been stellar at close defense all year, starting seven games (all starts) while recording nine groundballs and four caused turnovers. He was a key part of the strong defensive effort on Saturday.
