Thirty-five members of the Wissahickon High School and Wissahickon Youth Lacrosse Club and some parents raised more than $11,000 for treatment and research for children’s cancer by shaving their heads for St. Baldricks Foundation on March 12 at McFadden’s in South Philadelphia.

Members of the Wissahickon High and youth lacrosse teams shaved their heads to raise more than $11,000 for pediatric cancer

The participants, or shavees, worked hard for 90 days to solicit donations for St. Baldrick’s, a national non-profit organization devoted to helping to raise funds to fight pediatric cancer. The act of having their heads shaved was to show solidarity for the many kids that lose their hair due to cancer treatments.

The event was organized by Patrick Lacon, a coach for Wissahickon High School and Wissahickon Lacrosse Club. He had participated last year and decided to get the Wissahickon lacrosse community involved.

“The best part about shaving my head was, the feeling that I got knowing that I was helping a cause that was much bigger than me,” said Lacon, who was inspired by a cousin of his that has been battling cancer for most of his life, The foundation raised $21,593,682 in 2010. All the money goes to treating children with cancer of various sorts and spreading awareness for pediatric cancer.

The St Baldrick’s Foundation has fundraisers and shavings all over the US throughout the year. For more information on the foundation go to www.stbaldricks.org/
