Saturday’s women’s D2, D3 wrap: West Chester, Holy Family prevail

Host West Chester scored the first four goals of the second half to break a tie and open up a cushion it would not relinquish en route to a 13-9 PSAC women’s lacrosse victory over visiting Slippery Rock on a sunny, but very windy Saturday afternoon at Vonnie Gros Field.

West Chester (4-1, 2-0 PSAC) was led by Shannon Hayes, who had five points on the strength of one goal and four assists. Claire Grimwood finished with a hat trick and one assist. Tori Dugan (Bayard Rustin) and Jackie Hoover (Cheltenham) each socred twice.

Holy Family 17, Post 6

Junior Lauren Greco (Council Rock South) scored a game-high six goals to lead Holy Family to a victory in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) opener.

Holy Family improves to 2-3 overall and 1-0 in the CACC, while Post drops to 1-4 overall and 0-2 in the CACC.

Junior Gina Mansi scored three goals and had two ground balls. Senior Jennifer James (Little Flower) also scored two goals to go along with two assists.

Molloy 21, Chestnut Hill 10

Nicole Covella scored four goals for CHC in defeat.

Division III

Ursinus 15, Swarthmore 11

Five goals from junior midfielder Alyssa Thren (Upper Perkiomen) led the Bears (3-2) over Swarthmore (4-2) in Centennial Conference action. It was the conference opener for both teams.

Thren scored all five of her goals in the second half, as the Bears rallied from a 5-3 deficit midway through the first half and scored five straight to go up 8-5 with 25 minutes left in the game.

Senior attack Emily Hummel added three goals, while senior attack Lindsey Urban (Central Bucks East) and junior attack Emily Diehl each had two goals. Senior Allison Furman (Boyertown) had two assists and a goal in the win.

For the Garnet, Annalise Penikis (Strath Haven) had six goals and an assist.

Gettysburg 15, Haverford College 5

Freshman Katie Blumenthal (Notre Dame) had two goals and an assist and sophomore Alex Casey (Abington) led the Bullets with three caused turnovers and three ground balls in the Centennial Conference win.

Widener 18, King’s 5

Alex Taratuski had four goals and two assists and Rachel Porter added three goals and three assists for the Pride in the MAC win.
