Sometimes, as Molly Jordan knows, a boat coasting on the waters must change course.
In the case of Jordan, a senior psychology major at Haverford College, the detour came her freshman year when she first arrived at the school she had not even heard of just over a year before.
Hailing from West Bath, Maine, where she spent summers as a certified sailing instructor, Jordan gave up the only spot on the lacrosse field that she called home ~ the goalie cage.
Under the tutelage of Coach Julie Young, who taught Jordan “a ton”, the 2010 IWLCA Scholar-athlete made the transition from goalie to low defender quite smoothly.
“I’ve enjoyed the switch,” says the Phillylacrosse.com Collegiate Scholar-Athlete of the Week, “I like running around.”
Jordan, who has twice been named to the Centennial Conference Academic Honor Roll, also likes the direction she and her teammates are heading. With a 2-1 start in non-conference action, the Fords face their first Centennial league foe versus Gettysburg. this Saturday.
Jordan is optimistic her squad can handle whatever turbulence may arise.
“We really want to win conference,” she states unequivocally.
As part of a team that only lost one goalie and a senior, Jordan believes her team’s strong work ethic will play a role in how this season flows.
“The neat thing about our team is that we are small,” she said. “We don’t sub much. That’s makes us cohesive…there’s no hiding. It makes us work harder, which is really awesome.”
While Jordan remains clear about her team’s goal, her own future is as open as the wide, blue ocean. Following the lead of her parents, who both work in the field of education, she has worked with young children at summer camps and one-on-one situations.
She, along with her Haverford teammates, has also worked with youth in the Special Olympics. Thus, Jordan, a 3.7 GPA student herself, remains open to participating in education in some capacity as well.
However, she is not casting her fate in one direction just yet.
“I’m exploring,” she says.
