Penn improved to 3-0 on the young season tonight at Franklin Field as Corey Winkoff scored a late goal to spark a 7-6 victory over stubborn Lafayette in non-conference men’s lacrosse.
The 14th-ranked Quakers overcame a brilliant effort in goal by Lafayette freshman Andrijko Andrusko, who made 15 saves and kept his Leopards (2-2) alive after the Quakers scored five goals in less than nine minutes at the end of the first period to take a 5-1 lead.
Penn outshot Lafayette 45-23, but Andrusko made 10 second-half saves when the Leopards made their comeback.
Lafayette scored four straight goals to tie it, 6-6, with just under seven minutes to play in the game. But Winkoff scored unassisted with 3:58 to play to win it.
John Conneely led Penn with three goals and an assist, while Al Kohart had a pair of goals and Winkoff added two assists. Rob Fitzpatrick also had a goal and an assist.
For Lafayette, Mike Galione had five assists and Cesar Munoz won 7 of 8 face-offs. Will Heffernan (Haverford School) had a goal and an assist while Brian Floeck (Conestoga), Tyler Silvey, Ryan Hansen, Tyler Serling and Doug Prusoff each scored once.
