Weekly men’s college honors: Lafayette’s Andrusko (Holy Ghost Prep), Penn’s Feeney

Lafayette freshman goalkeeper Andrijko Andrusko (Yardley/Holy Ghost Prep) has been named the Patriot League Rookie of the Week, announced today by the league office.

In Saturday’s 12-6 victory over Binghamton, Andrusko was sensational in goal for the Maroon and White, notching 17 saves on the afternoon. He also earned his first career win on College Hill.

After a goal by Binghamton with 58 seconds left in the first quarter, the freshman keeper did not allow another goal until the 9:39 minute mark of the fourth quarter.

During that stretch the Leopards outscored the Bearcats 7-0 and turning a 4-4 tie into an 11-4 advantage.

Head coach Terry Mangan was certainly pleased with his freshman’s performance.

“Andrijko did a great job on Saturday,” Mangan said. “He plays with a calm demeanor and has a great quality of focusing on the next shot. We hope that serves him well as we move forward into our season.”

Penn’s Feeney is Ivy League Rookie of the Week

The Ivy League has named Penn freshman goalie Brian Feeney as the first Ivy League Rookie of the Week for 2011.

Feeney’s honor was well-deserved – in his collegiate debut, he made nine saves and allowed just three goals as Penn knocked off defending NCAA champion Duke, 7-3, Saturday afternoon at Franklin Field. Feeney had four saves in the first half, when the Quakers shut out the Blue Devils, and added four in the final quarter to preserve the win. Duke’s three-goal output was its lowest in a game since 1986.

Penn’s win propelled them to No. 14 in this week’s USILA national coaches poll. The Quakers are in action twice this week, hosting Bucknell Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. and Lafayette Friday night at 7 p.m.
