Men’s lacrosse: Penn stuns defending national champion Duke, 7-3, to open season at Franklin Field

The Penn men’s lacrosse team opened its season today at Franklin Field with a stunning 7-3 victory over defending national champion Duke before a chilled by excited crowd of 1,368.

The Quakers, led by the goaltending of freshman Brian Feeney (9 saves), face-off work of twin brother Danny Feeney (7 of 14) and a brilliant defense, led 3-0 after one period and 5-0 at halftime. The No. 10 Blue Devils (1-2) never got close as Penn dominated the groundballs and kept the pressure on Duke goalie Dan Wigrizer (Haverford School), who played strong in defeat with 11 saves.

Rob Fitzpatrick led Penn with two goals and Al Kohart, Dan Savage, Ryan Parietti, Drew Belinsky (two assists) and Anthony Adler each scored once. Maxx Meyer led the defense with five caused turnovers.

Penn is coached by Duke grad Mike Murphy and top assistant Mike Keating, an Episcopal Academy grad who also played at Duke.

Duke got two caused turnovers and a groundball from sophomore defenseman Bill Conners (Malvern Prep).
