Today’s men’s lacrosse contest added to what has become a great Main Line rivalry between two perennial top-15 teams as No. 7 Haverford College came back from a three-goal second half deficit to pull off a 6-5 victory at No. 14 Cabrini College.
The Fords scored five unanswered goals including Travis Gregory’s early in the fourth period which gave the Fords the lead.
Gregory led Haverford (1-1) with two goals while Phillip Valliant, Myles Monaghan, Nick Schoen and Jason Leeds all scored one goal each. Max Hjelm (Conestoga) dished out a pair of assists.
Paul Skulski (Garnet Valley) and Dan Terenick (Ridley) tallied two goals each for Cabrini (0-1) while Bobby Thorp added one.
A low scoring first period saw Skulski and Terenick net the only goals to give the Cavaliers a 2-0 advantage. Valliant got HC on the board early in the second period, but Terenick and Thorp scored goals before the end of the period for a 4-1 Cabrini lead.
Leeds got the ball rolling for the Fords with a goal just 48 seconds into the third period. Six minutes later Gregory scored his first of the game on an assist from Hjelm to pull HC within one, 4-3. Before the third period came to an end, Monaghan scored the equalizer on a feed from Gregory.
Less than five minutes into the fourth period Gregory picked up a ground ball off a Cabrini turnover and after clearing into the offensive zone, Valliant found Gregory for the go-ahead goal. Haverford goalkeeper Joe Banno came up with six saves in the final frame, giving his team the chance to take the lead and eventually add to it.
Schoen added the insurance goal with 7:01 remaining and it became a very important tally as Skulski brought Cabrini within one, 6-5, with less than four minutes to go. The Fords did not allow Cabrini to take a shot in the final three minutes and a Cavaliers turnover in their own end with eight seconds left sealed the win.
Banno came up with 19 saves in the contest while Erick Zarzecki made six for Cabrini.
Eastern 7, Swarthmore 4
Dave Darling scored three goals and Aaron Benz made 13 saves as the Eagles jumped to a 7-1 lead and held on for the win in a non-conference opener.
Zach Belden led the Garnet with two goals and an assist and Wes Marcek scored twice.
Ursinus 5, Marymount 3
Jeff Ocampo scored three goals and Shawn Caven (Pennsbury) won 9 of 12 face-offs to lift the Bears in their opener at Washington D.C.
King’s 11, Neumann 6
Freshman Sam Maldou (Sun Valley) led Neumann with two goals and an assist in its opener.
Scranton 10, DeSales 3
Mike Rufo (Haverford School) had two goals and Taylor Nelson (Downingtown East) added a goal and two assists for the Royals in their opener.
Lynchburg 10, Ohio Wesleyan 3
Dylan Hoff (Downingtown East) had three goals and three assists, defenseman Joe Lisicky (Unionville) scored once and scooped three groundballs and Jon Gill (Unionville) added two groundballs to help Lynchburg improve to 1-1.
Division II
C.W. Post 13, Chestnut Hill College 7
Dakota Maurer made 16 saves and Alex Kurbjun scored three goals for CHC (1-1) in its East Coast Conference loss to the defending national champions (4-0, 1-0).
Mark Winkelspecht (Parkland) and Kevin Sonderschafer (Central Bucks South) also scored for Chestnut Hill.
