Drexel men ranked No. 19 by Inside Lacrosse, look to make NCAAs in 2011

The Drexel men’s lacrosse team is ranked No. 19 in the Inside Lacrosse Preseason poll.

The Dragons went 10-5 overall and 3-3 in the Colonial Athletic Association last year under coach Brian Voelker, in his first year after moving from Penn.

Drexel was ranked among the top 10 teams for several weeks last year after key wins over Notre Dame and Hofstra, but failed to reach its goal of making the NCAA playoffs.
Highlights from the Inside Lacrosse article:

The Dragons’ defense is anchored by junior goalie Mark Manos (Salesianum School, DE), a third-team All-American last year. He had a .585 save percentage and an 8.30 goals against average and was the Colonial Athletic Association’s Player of the Year.

The key returnees in front of Manos are junior defender Dana Wilber, a first-team All-CAA pick last year, and junior long stick Frank Tufano (first-team All-CAA).

Offensively, the Dragons return senior Scott Perri (22 G, 19 A) and sophomore Robert Church (32, 9). Sophomore Brendan Glynn (St. Joseph’s Prep) could provide a big boost this year.

One void is the loss of senior midfielder Kevin Stockel, who tore his anterior cruciate ligament and is lost for the year. He will be eligible to get a fifth year in 2012. Other keys at midfield include junior Kyle Bergman, sophomore Nick Trizano, seniors Dan Layfield and Aaron Prosser, and sophomores Craig Owen (Haverford School) and Kris Franklin.

The Rookies to Watch are freshmen midfielder Ben McIntosh, and defensemen Tyler Houchins (La Salle, redshirted last year) and Matt Dusek.

Drexel opens with a big game, visiting Virginia on Feb. 19. The Dragons come home on Feb. 26 against Albany and then host Villanova in a CAA game on March 1.
