Women’s recruit: Hun School (N.J.) grad Shockley (Newtown) happy at Villanova

Freshman midfielder Lauren Shockley, a graduate of the Hun School (N.J.) and a native of Newtown, has earned a roster spot on the Villanova women’s team.

Shockley started playing lacrosse in Council Rock schools in 8th grade and then earned four varsity letters at the Hun. She played club lacrosse for Tri-State and made the Wildcats’ roster as a walk-on.

“I chose Villanova partially to continue my family legacy,” she said. “Both my parents attended and graduated from the University. Also, I loved the campus and atmosphere and just grew up knowing it was somewhere I wanted to go.”

Shockley is enrolled in the Villanova School of Business and is leaning toward a double major in International Business and Finance.

“It has been amazing to get the chance to be a part of a program that holds its players to such a high standard both on and off the field,” she said. “It’s awesome to play with such athletic and talented girls and be part of a team where the intensity level is always high.

“My expectations are high for the 2011 season because we have great players at every class from freshman all the way up to seniors, as well as new coaches (Elizabeth Weber and Xan Weitzel) that will most certainly help bring our game to the next level.

Villanova is coached by Jebb Chagan. Weber, a 2009 Loyola grad, was a volunteer assistant at La Salle last year and Weitzel, a four-time state champion at New Jersey power Moorestown, starred at Boston University (Class of 2010). The other assistant is Monica Manco.

“Lauren is a very athletic player with great range,” Chagan said. “We anticipate that she will compete at both midfield and defensive positions.”

Shockley earned 11 varsity letters in lacrosse, basketball and soccer at Hun School and received the BoBo Holmes Award as the most dedicated and resilient male and female Hun athlete of the year.
