Methacton senior attack-midfielder Megan Nearing has committed to play Division III lacrosse at Gettysburg College.
Nearing was a Second Team Pioneer Athletic Conference pick in 2010 when the Warriors went 12-7 and reached the finals of the PAC-10 tournament while advancing to the District 1 tournament. Nearing, who collected 42 goals, 30 groundballs and 13 assists, also plays club lacrosse for Ultimate Goal.
Nearing will join Episcopal Academy defender Allie Clark as a recruit at Gettysburg for veteran coach Carol Cantele (alum of Nether Providence, now Strath Haven). Last year Cantele guided the Bullets to an 18-4 record and a berth in the NCAA semifinals where they fell to eventual champion Salisbury. Cantele was named FieldTurf Division III Coach of the Year.
“I played in a 5v5 tournament and fell in love with the campus,” she said. “Coach Cantele and coach (Barb) Jordan reminded me of what I am used to at Methacton.
“It’s such a strong lacrosse program and I feel like I will be continuing my lacrosse career in a positive way.”
Nearing, a member of the National Honor Society who has made the Distinguished Honor Roll all four years and sports a 96 average, is going to major in Health Sciences and plans to become a physical therapist.
Nearing is the fourth Methacton senior to commit to play college lacrosse. Emily Kellett (attack) and Abby Devlin (midfielder) signed with Division I Drexel and Nicole Rossi (Seton Hill) signed with Division II Seton Hill.
“We have been working very hard and I am so excited for the season,” Nearing said. “Our talent is increasing and I think we have a chance of beating Boyertown this year.”
