Recent Central Bucks South graduate Cory Sonderschafer has committed to play Division II lacrosse at Chestnut Hill College.

Central Bucks South's Cory Sonderschafer will play at Chestnut Hill College

Sonderschafer, a two-year starter, who was slated to be a key player as a senior in 2010 after earning Third Team Suburban One Continental Conference honors as a junior. But he broke his collarbone early in spring practice and missed the entire season.

Sonderschafer was attending Montgomery County Community College this fall and considering a transfer to Penn State Abington to play Division III lacrosse. Then he learned through his twin brother, Chestnut Hill College freshman Kevin Sonderschafer, that recently hired CHC coach Brian Dougherty was in need of another goalie.

“I got a text from my brother saying they wanted me to come play for Chestnut Hill,” Sonderschafer said. “I was like, ‘Who wants me to play? Doc wants me to come play? Yeah, I’ll look into it!’”

Dougherty, hired this fall to run the second-year program after serving as an assistant at Penn last year, is considered one of the greatest goalies to ever play lacrosse. He helped lead the U.S. to the FIL World Championship last summer and was on two Major League Lacrosse championship teams with the Philadelphia Barrage. He also was a two-time NCAA Goalie of the Year at Maryland in his college days.

“I went to a couple of his camps and he (Dougherty) knew of me,” Sonderschafer said. “I went over there and visited and he told me a few of his goalies transferred out.”

Sonderschafer, who played club lacrosse for LB3, plans to study Accounting at Chestnut Hill.

“I wanted to play college lacrosse when I graduated, but the finances didn’t work out,” Sonderschafer said. “But this is a break. When coach Dougherty got to Chestnut Hill, he saw my brother’s name (on the roster) and asked him if he had a brother.”
